Bernard Place Housing Development
St. Bernard Housing Development Corporation, a non-profit subsidiary of St. Bernard Hospital, is the driving force behind Bernard Place, a 90-unit affordable homes initiative in the Englewood neighborhood. This unique development served as the first phase of “New Englewood Crossings,” a community development endeavor in this south side community.
Located at 64th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, St. Bernard Hospital and its housing development corporation see home ownership as key to the economic health of the community. In the hospital's view, improving Englewood's economic well-being is as vital to caring for individual and family health as providing high-quality medical care.
To make Bernard Place a reality, the hospital partnered with the City of Chicago through the Department of Housing's New Homes for Chicago Program. The program helps qualified buyers to afford the purchase price of a home and underwrites some of the cost of the development.
Bernard Place could not have been realized without the support of the Sisters of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph in Montreal, Canada, the community of women religious who first came to Englewood in 1903 to found the hospital. The Sisters provided a grant of more than $800,000 to support the project and the hospital's community development efforts.
Phase II: New Englewood Crossings
New Englewood Crossings is the parent concept that encompasses Bernard Place, Parish Corners, and The Oaklands residential housing developments. These three-bedroom, single-family homes redefine the streetscape of one of the city’s oldest communities. Over 120 single-family residences, set along tree-lined streets, will offer an exciting choice of affordable and attractive homes. New Englewood Crossings will provide both newcomers and long-time inhabitants an opportunity to come home to a new Englewood, where a neighborhood is being transformed with new homes, new facilities, and the beautiful new 40-acre Kennedy-King College.
