St. Bernard Urges Women to Find Time for a Mammogram

Did you know that breast cancer can be identified up to two years before a woman becomes symptomatic? This is just one of many reasons why regular mammograms are strongly recommended for all women, especially women over the age of 40.

St. Bernard Hospital is pleased to announce our “Time for a Mammogram” campaign, urging those who are not insured for a mammogram to take advantage of this opportunity. Through a $100K state grant, St. Bernard’s mammography department is able to provide this critical exam for women who do not have insurance, or those whose insurance does not include coverage of mammograms.

Breast cancer is most treatable when detected in its earliest stages, an average of nearly two years before a woman feels a lump. Mammograms can detect about 90% of breast cancers in women who do not show any signs or symptoms, and can identify cancers that cannot be felt during a clinical exam.

Women over the age of 40 should have breast exams and mammograms once a year. Call St. Bernard’s Mammography Department, (773) 962-3919, to find out if you are eligible for this free service.
