For the 18th year at St. Bernard, hospital departments take on the role of Santa Claus for some of Englewood’s neediest families through our annual Adopt-a-Family Christmas Basket drive, led by Barbara Young and the Community Relations Committee.

This month, 58 families (including a total of 159 children) will receive gifts of toys, non-perishable foods, and other jolly gifts as part of the hospital-wide collection. As always, departments select from the list of families, and fill a holiday basket with gifts of all shape and sizes.

Environmental Services, Laboratory, Health Information Mgmt., and Emergency are among those departments who will provide for families of seven children each! Some other departments will serve as the North Pole for multiple families this season.

According to Ms. Young, most of the families are found through Social Services and Business Office departments, and perhaps from surrounding schools and grandparents organizations.

“We get a great response every year,” she says. “Most of the employees come up and ask me around the end of November, when are we going to get our family? So that tells me this is something they want to do.”
