When Carolyn Estell reflects on her career, one belief has guided her every step of the way:
“In my opinion, participating in healthcare is one of the most important things a person can do.”
For more than five decades, Carolyn has lived that belief through her unwavering dedication to St. Bernard Hospital, becoming the hospital’s longest-serving employee and one of its most respected leaders. Now, as she enters retirement, she leaves behind a legacy that started 56 years ago.
Carolyn began her journey at St. Bernard Hospital on October 26, 1970, joining the hospital for her first and only place of employment, starting off as a graduate staff nurse when many still referred to the hospital as “St. Berns.” What started as a nursing career quicky evolved into a lifetime of service, leadership, mentorship and innovation that continues to impact patients, staff and the Englewood community today.
Throughout her 56-year career, Carolyn embraced every opportunity to learn, grow and lead. She advanced from graduate staff nurse to charge nurse, head nurse in medical-surgical services and later helped launch St. Bernard Hospital’s telemetry unit as its head nurse. She then went on to lead the Intensive Care Unit for 10 years before serving as a nurse manager and transitioning into nursing education, where she helped shape the next generation of healthcare professionals.
In 2006, Carolyn brought her clinical expertise to IT, where she currently serves as an Information Systems Clinical Coordinator. Her unique ability to bridge patient care and technology has helped support the hospital’s mission while improving the delivery of care across the organization.
Over the years, Carolyn has witnessed generations of employees begin their careers at St. Bernard. One of her greatest joys has been watching those individuals grow into leaders and professionals.
“I am gratified to be here,” Carolyn says. “It’s a privilege to work with these folks every day.”
That gratitude is matched by the admiration of her colleagues who have benefited from her guidance, wisdom and steady leadership. For 56 years, Carolyn has served as a steward, mentor, teacher and advocate, helping St. Bernard Hospital continue its 122-year mission of caring for residents in the Englewood community and Chicago’s South Side.
St. Bernard Hospital proudly celebrates Carolyn Estell for her commitment, leadership and service. Thank you, Carolyn Estell, for more than half a century of dedication to our community!
