Chief Financial Officer

“Our values at St. Bernard of caring, promoting wellness and delivering compassion and respect guide everything we do – including our long-term financial plan and how we prioritize our budget. Our careful economic stewardship represents Catholicism in action -- a commitment to being responsive to where the needs are greatest. I approach my role everyday with the goal of making certain we can provide the right resources to those who depend on us.”

Robert Springer joined St. Bernard in 2016 and now serves the organization as its Chief Financial Officer.  He is responsible for the direction and oversight of all hospital financial strategies; operating and capital budgets; and system of financial reporting, audits and controls that support the Hospital’s overall vision as well as specific objectives.

Springer stewards all investments and long term planning to ensure the sustainability of the St. Bernard mission for decades to come.  His tenure includes successfully modernizing functions in accounting and payroll, and significantly growing the range of capabilities performed by the Finance department and its personnel.

Prior to joining St. Bernard, Springer served as Regional Controller for Presence Health between 2013 and 2015, and was responsible for all financial and statistical reporting of two acute care hospitals as well as their Foundation.  His background includes Chief Financial Officer roles for Family Christian Health Center, a federally qualified health center (FQHC), where he successfully arranged financing to support a new clinic site; and Home Bound Healthcare, a Flossmoor-based home health company where he implemented numerous process improvements that generated significant costs savings.

For more than 20 years, Springer was Director at McGladrey & Pullen (now RSM), a leading Chicago accounting firm, where he maintained expertise in both for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare issues.  He consulted clients on a wide-range of regulatory and corporate compliance matters, clinical issues and internal decision-making processes.

He received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1985.  Springer is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA); and a member of the Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS).
