Investing in our Community

St. Bernard’s mission in Englewood goes beyond providing high-quality medical care. We believe we have a duty to participate with the community in addressing the neighborhood’s economic health. Bernard Place is a prime example of how St. Bernard has provided opportunities for families to improve their lives, ultimately benefiting the community that we all share.

Bernard Place

Between 2000 and 2007 St. Bernard, in collaboration with the city of Chicago and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, developed and built Bernard Place, a 77-unit affordable housing development at 64th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway. Generous support from the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph, the community of women religious who founded the hospital, helped to make the project a reality. The three-bedroom, single-family, and 2-flat homes sit along tree-lined streets and are the first for-sale housing built in Englewood in 30 years. Bernard Place won the prestigious Richard H. Driehaus Award for Outstanding Nonprofit Neighborhood Real Estate Project.  Because of Bernard Place, 77 new families have made Englewood their home, bringing vitality and a sense of community pride with them.

St. Bernard continues to seek new ways to bring positive development to the community. We are one of the founders of Teamwork Englewood, which runs a New Communities Program which focuses on implementing projects and initiatives to improve the quality-of-life for local residents based on a community lead and crafted plan.
